Academy FAQ

The Freshman Academy creates more opportunities for teams of teachers to work with students to know them better and to respond to their academic needs.  Students are assigned to either the morning or afternoon house with a common team of teachers for English, social studies and science.  Similar to the block classes that students have experienced in middle school, these courses are designed to maximize connections among the academic disciplines.

Development of a “Personal Education Plan”, (mandated by the State of Oregon for all students), career exploration and computer skills are included in the curriculum for the Academy.  Time within each block is flexible, at the discretion of the team of teachers, to allow for a variety of experiences.   Access to a technology lab is included so that all students receive one hour of technology access each week, connected to their core classes.  Students are taught valuable skills including how to log into and use our school network, how to properly use the internet for research and how to make the best use of the computer for accomplishing tasks associated with their classes.

Two typical class schedules are shown below.  Academy classes meet daily, while other classes meet on the school alternating block schedule.
